Where Champions Are Made On and Off the Mat
La Costa Canyon Maverick Wrestling has been League Champions 14 times, won three CIF titles and successful at the state and national levels. We placed in the top 25 in the state tournament as a team six times.In the past 22 years, the team has had 108 1st Team All-League Wrestlers, 33 CIF Champions, 61 State Qualifiers, 22 wrestlers have placed in the Top 12 in the state of California, with Ryan Williams becoming the first State Champion and 2004 National Placer - 6th Place - in our districts history, the same year Jeff May took 2nd in State.
In 2007, Elliott Dennis took 2nd in the state championships and was honored Academic All-American status. The LCC Wrestling team was also #1 in the section for posting the highest accumulative GPA out of all the wrestling programs in the section in 2007 and 2009 and the girls won it in 2018.
In 2010, we were CIF Champs with 5 individual champions. We finished 14th in the state with our second State Champ in school history: Bryan Grubbs (Cal State Fullerton ) and Kyle Switzler (George Mason) placed 4th in the state.
In 2013, we had our first ever National Champion Ian Baker (Princeton Graduate) who was also a state champ at 195 in 2014. In 2015, we had 3 state qualifiers including Alec Baker who placed 6th at State and 8th in the nation. Also, many of our alumni wrestlers have gone on to college and continue being student/athletes at the next level. Andrew McDonald is currently at Lehigh Univ. We have had many guys go on to college and wrestle and many have earned scholarships to universities including UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton, University of Missouri, Cal Ply SLO, San Francisco State, Bakersfield, Cal Baptist, Drexel, Stanford, Lehigh, and Princeton to n
name a few.
